A Codebox is the digital lockbox RentSmart uses to enable Self-Access showings. Install one on the door, and leads can tour the property on their own using one-time access codes. RentSmart partners exclusively with Codebox as its hardware provider — “codebox” and “lockbox” are used interchangeably throughout RentSmart.

Two ways to get a lockbox

Both options end with the same capability:
  • Buy a new Codebox — $100 + shipping per unit. Ships pre-configured to your codes; pairs to your account automatically on arrival.
  • Link an existing lockbox — free. Connect a Codebox you already own from another platform. Linking takes up to 7 business days.
You’ll want at least one lockbox per property you plan to run as Self-Access.

What lockboxes enable

A lockbox assigned to an active property unlocks (literally) the Self-Access showing flow:
  1. Leads book a showing
  2. At showing time, RentSmart texts the lead asking for the last 4 digits of the serial number (confirms they’re on site)
  3. RentSmart texts back a one-time access code
  4. Lead tours, locks up, returns the key to the lockbox
  5. Post-showing cleanup SMS goes out automatically
You don’t need to be there.

Three codes on every Codebox

Every Codebox has three codes:
  • Shackle Code (5 digits) — releases the shackle so you can physically place or remove the lockbox from the door
  • Door Code (5 digits) — master code that opens the lockbox door. Leads never see this — they get unique one-time codes.
  • Admin Code (6 digits) — for changing Codebox settings on the device itself
You set these during Buy or Link. You can change them later via the Settings button on the Lockbox card (and you’ll need to manually update the physical device to match).

Lockbox statuses

Every lockbox is in one of six statuses at any time. The full reference is on Lockbox statuses, but the short version:
  • Processing — newly ordered or linked, being prepared
  • Shipped — bought lockbox is en route to you
  • Connected — activated and assigned to a property
  • Unassigned — activated but not currently on a property
  • Removal / Return — being removed from your account

Where to manage lockboxes

The Lockboxes page at app.rentsmart.com/lockboxes shows every Codebox on your account with status filters and per-card actions.
