# Activate a listing

> Publish your property to syndication partners and open it for showings.

When you finish [creating a listing](/properties/create-listing), it starts as **Inactive** — no syndication has happened, no public URL exists, and leads can't book showings. Activation publishes the listing everywhere it needs to go.

## Open the property

Go to **Listings → click the property address**. You'll land on the **Individual Property page** at `app.rentsmart.com/individual-property?property_id=...`.

The header shows an **INACTIVE** pill and an **Activate Property** button (red). Click it.

    Either write your description manually or use the **AI Listing Description Generator**:

    * **Style** — Professional, Friendly, Trendy, or Direct
    * **Length** — Short, Medium, or Long
    * **Advanced** options (optional) — paste your own past listings as a style reference, add custom instructions, or include a screening-criteria summary at the bottom

    AI generation takes 30–90 seconds. You can regenerate as many times as you want, or hand-edit the result.

    *This step only appears if TransUnion requires property-specific questions for your property's location.* Answer everything shown to proceed.

  <Step title="Final activation choices">
    Pick:

    * **Showing Type** — **Self-Access** (lockbox-based, unattended) or **In-Person** (attended). This locks in at activation. To change it later, you'll need to deactivate first.
    * **Assign a Lockbox** — only shown if you chose Self-Access. Pick from your available (Unassigned) lockboxes. If you have none, you'll need to [buy](/lockboxes/buy-codebox) or [link](/lockboxes/link-existing) one before activating with Self-Access.

    Two extras below the form:

    * **Download QR Code** — print and place inside the property to give leads a quick way to start a Profile
    * **Listing Page URL** — copy your Public Listing Page URL for use on external sites

    Click **Activate Property** to publish.

## What happens immediately

* The status pill flips to **ACTIVE**
* The property syndicates to listing partners (Apartments.com, Zillow Group, Rent., Apartment List, Zumper, Dwellsy, RentalBeast — see [syndication partners](/reference/syndication) for limits)
* A public URL is generated at `app.rentsmart.com/[your-slug]/[property-slug]`
* Leads can now book showings
